But I don't think we need a new configure switch, just your proposed new environment variable. Maybe call it STRIP_SOLVER. Whenever --enable-symbols is used STRIP_SOLVER should be set to "", otherwise it should be "true". And --enable-crashdump should not enable symbols by default, it looks (please correct me here) that a build with symbols is not needed for the crashreporter.
