As I used Writer version 2.2.0, I encountered the following information in the
Help section:
"AutoCorrect has been activated.
Double quotation marks (") have been replaced."
Call me picky, but I feel this needs correction. In my mind:
• An apostrophe is this: '
• A quote is this: "
• A so-called double quote would be this: ""
I feel all references to "double quote(s)" should be changed to "quote(s)."
Likewise, references to "single quote(s)," if any, should be changed to
"apostrophe(s)."
Brief Discussion:
Yes, I've heard the term "double quote" used in the IT community as long as
there's been an IT community, I guess. However, I feel the term "double quote"
is a misnomer UNLESS it refers to: "" .
Why has the term "double quote" been so widely adopted? Perhaps so they can
dispense with the word "apostrophe"? I don't know, frankly.
Calling this [ " ] a "double quote" makes as much sense as saying that digital
(binary) data is represented by zeros and ones. It's just plain incorrect,
IMHO. Wiser minds than mine will decide, I'm sure.
Lastly, please forgive my violation of the Issue Submission Guidelines, if I've
made any such missteps. I'm using Open Office for the first time today and this
is my first issue submission.
Thanks, good luck, and bless you all for the Open Office Project.
