The terms are not uniform. My help says in the index "master pages, see slide
masters".
Use View > Master > Slide master to change to the master pages. Select a master
slide in the left pane, then use "Rename Master" from its context menu.

The "normal" way of formatting is, to set the common styles in the master. This
includes background, objects that should appear on all slides like a logo, style
of the presentation objects, fields like page number.
To use different page styles in a presentation you need different masters.
Chance to master view, than you can create new masters. Assign the master to a
slide before creating the next master.

You should discuss the problems in a mailing list or forum to see, whether here
is really an issue.
