2007 -------
I noticed this bug (which also exists in Thunderbird) within days of
downloading Writer (within minutes in Thunderbird). I'd be looking at the
screen at the end of the line and notice that my space wasn't showing so I'd
hit space a few more times then realize that I need to backspace over the
excess spaces and I'd have to backspace until part of the last word is deleted
to see where I am. The excess spaces can be copied to the clipboard and I
assume they're saved too, so I wouldn't want to just leave them in there when
they're not needed, but I don't want Writer to _assume_ I don't need the
spaces. They might be needed when viewing the text with a different font size
or screen width, when they may appear in the middle of a line. I want them to
exist if entered and be indicated somehow and I want to know where my cursor is
if I choose to delete them.

The question is whether the end-of-line spaces should be indicated by the
cursor advancing into the margin (what to do when it reaches the end of the
margin is another issue) or indicated on the following line, where the next non-
space would appear. If they'll be indicated on the following line, then the
cursor would move backwards, over the spaces, when the non-space is typed,
which might not look as pretty to some people as margin spaces.

I think end-of-line spaces should be shown in the margin (outside the body of
the text). I read that MS Word does that. If there are so many spaces that they
overflow the margin, then do one of the following:

1. Widen the screen, adding a horizontal scroll bar if necessary.

2. Have the cursor stop at the far side of the margin while continuing to
record additional spaces, as happens before the margin with the current bug.

3. Indicate additional spaces on the following line, where the next non-space
would appear. When a non-space character is typed, display it at the beginning
of the line (backspacing over the spaces but remembering the spaces exist).

If View > Nonprinting characters is selected, then a dot should be shown for
each end-of-line space (currently dots are only shown for mid-line spaces even
when end of line spaces exist) when the spaces don't exceed margin width. If
the spaces exceed margin width and method 1 is used (screen widening), then let
the space-indicating dots appear past the margins when viewing nonprinting
characters.

If the spaces exceed margin width and method 2 is used (cursor stops) then use
some notation in the margin to indicate the number of spaces when viewing
nonprinting characters and when adding or deleting spaces there.

If the spaces exceed margin width and method 3 is used, render the spaces as in
method 1 or 2 once a non-space character after the end-of-line spaces is
entered.
