I think there is a fundamental problem with the way OOo configures Java, and
that is that it is stored as a user option when really it is a machine option.
It is wrong for two reasons:
(1) The typical OOo user has no interest in Java: he or she just wants to run
OOo and for everything to work smoothly
(2) The user home directory may be mounted on more than one machine, and they
don't necessarily have the same version of Java

Fortunately on at least some systems (e.g. OpenSuSE Linux) there is a solution:
the directory /etc/alternatives contains a number of links which remain valid
after upgrades, for example /etc/alternatives/jre.

At the moment even if you explicitly tell OOo that Java lives in
/etc/alternatives/jre it carefully stores the physical location which is
guaranteed to become obsolete in a month or so. I suggest that instead the
detection process by default should always look for /etc/alternatives/jre and
use it if it is available.
