Hi everybody! Some comments on comments on notes...

@raindrops: Thank you for looking at the Notes2 wiki page [1] and providing your
feedback. In this comment I want to reply to your proposals and the discussion
in the wiki.

RAINDROP'S PROPOSALS

Some days ago I copied the requirements list to the wiki [2]. Two entries seem
to match your proposals (StR = Stakeholder Requirement; document content element
= text, graphics, frames, ...):

• StR17 The user requires, that he can use the document content element TBD to
refer to a Note.

• StR18 The user wishes, that a Note can be inserted without reference to a
document content element.

When we started working on this requirements list, we decided that for StR17 we
will use the current behavior and characters/strings. StR18 indeed has a very
low priority. --> Yes, that matches the current behavior of "the" large
competitor. :-)

Comment, raindrops, 2008-02-02, 13:45:

* Why not treat Acrobat as "best-in-class"?

Acrobat has some nice features for the Notes in PDFs. The Notes functionality
there serves different needs because PDFs are static documents. In Writer, the
document can be simply changed and these changes can also be commented (already
available for the tracking changes functionality).

So when we started working on our Notes, we looked on both Acrobat and also some
nice information at Adobe Design Center. We also have some ideas [3] of a simple
task management but that will need some more time.

* Clicking on the markup to open the launch the edit window

The basic idea is to show Notes the neighborhood of the text. If the Note is not
visible at the moment we will provide a kind of Note Preview which will provide
an option to edit the Note. Unfortunately this proposal is not yet in the Notes2
wiki, so please have a look at [4] instead.

3: two non-adjacent sentences on the page

The current Notes system will not allow that. The user may just insert separate
Notes for that and refer to the respective other one. Therefore we provide the
time/date information in each note and - hopefully - will be able to introduce
hyperlinks for Notes (Please look on my comments in the Notes2 discussion
"Complex Structures" [5]).

4: several paragraphs put together

Why not? It should work, because several paragraphs are nothing different than a
large string.

5. An image (as a whole)

Yes, you're right. Something to think about further. In the meantime, the use
case mentioned by es (2008-02-02, 14:54) is fairly simple and works well. I'll
keep that in mind.

6. several specific parts of an image (each invoked a separate comment)

If your insert a fairly complex graphic which needs to be commented in such a
way, you may comment it in the program it was created in. For the Writer it
should be sufficient to provide information that there is "something" wrong.
Again, we will provide basic features (like enumerations and strike through)
which makes it possible to track several annotations for one object the Note
refers to.

Again, I'm very impressed that you discuss those issues in such a detail. That
helps everyone to check if we didn't forget something or that the current design
satisfies most user's needs. Please keep in mind that every feature we add may
lead to a more complex design (from both the user's point and the developer's
point of view), may have impact on the document format and will keep the
developers from working on more urgent problems.

THE WIKI

With reference to the wiki's discussion page: your comment is already there and
was the reason for my further research which made me look on that issue.
Alternatives to the issue tracker or the wiki are the mailing lists (e.g. dev or
ux-discuss) for future discussions.

I hope I didn't miss the point. Bye, Christoph
