For linux/freedesktop's shared-mime info system, the mime-type registration itself doesn't imply any preference regarding the application used to open a file. As for windows beta should be able to offer OOo 3.0 beta in the open with list - mimetype registration is necessary for that. And does the "only" imply no entries in Window's start-menu?
