Validating PDF/A-1 files is a nightmare as there is no official certification for validation software I'm aware of. For the record, the modified file provided by pl also validates againt latest eval versions of Apago PDFAppraiser & Seal Systems PDFChecker (in this case, strangely, the PDF/A-1a validates, but not PDF/A-1b, as the soft complains about "Annotation with prohibited action <URI> found"). The only OSS file format analyzer claiming PDF/A support I know, JHOVE, does not affect it to a PDF/A profile.
