"Actually those are mot really hidden if you start at
http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org"
But as an ordinary user, how would I know to start there? As an ordinary user I
am faced with downloading US English (aka American) or French or Gujarati or any
one of many other languages, but not English English. You can tell the extent of
my frustration/anger by the fact that I signed up here specifically to make the
point. I am not a programmer, I am a user. I cannot contribute to the project by
making things work, just by using it.
"By correcting the existing dictionary do you mean you edited the file
en_US.dic? Or was it some other file?"
It was one of whatever I was offered by the program when I chose "Add" after
right clicking a word with a red wiggly line under it. I may not have been
consistent in my choice. How on earth should a user know which dictionary to
choose?
"Also just curious because of 'upgrade' is a rather unclear term when it comes
to e.g. spell check dictionaries:
Do you mean a) Upgrade to a newer version of OOo ..."
Yes, upgrade to a newer version of OOo.
Perhaps here my irritation is because upgrades of OOo habitually install
themselves from scratch, as though one has never had the program installed
before. Well, until recently, because this time it did preserve my dictionary, I
haven't used the program in real life yet, so I have the next few weeks of
trepidation while finding what, if anything, the upgrade has undone this time.
But it did still destroy all my shortcuts.
Please pass these comments on to whoever can address the issues, and make it
unnecessary for me to return here. But above all, please get the appropriate
persons to remember that speakers of American English are not the only English
speakers in the world, despite decades of cultural imperialism by Hollywood,
McDonald's, and Coca Cola.
I have changed the status to "Won't Fix". If you think OOo has done better than
that, change it to whatever you like.
