Another reason why this is important is that when a .DOC file is opened, any
comments that spanned a
range of text are instead "converted" to only be positioned at the end of the
text span. Therefore when the
document is saved back out to DOC format (or even ODF), that information is
lost. This creates a major
compatibility problem if exchanging files with others using Microsoft Word
(which is a lot of people), since
the file returned to them "broke" the annotations.
