Answering the questions:
i) OOo did offer to recover.
ii) If I accepted the offer to recover, OOo went into a crazy state: window
still visible without accepting any
click or cmd-anything, no dock icon, no OOo application in finder with cmd-tab
and with cmd-opt-esc.
This went away after re-starting the computer only. If I declined the offer to
recover (which I did most of
the time), the crash occured again when re-starting OOo as described.

I have worked with OpenOffice.org 3.0.0 in the meantime, creating, changing,
and printing a text
document which I needed urgently, in the following way: After each OOo crash I
deleted ~/Library/Application Support/OpenOffice.org, went through the
registration assistent, opened my text
document, changed it in any way necessary, and saved it. After having exited
OOo and trying to open it
again later, e.g. the next day, it crashed, as described.

After several days, I deleted OOo, installed it again, proceeded like described
above.

BUT several days later, when I worked again with my text document, OOo didn't
crash again. I tested with
several other documents of various types: no crash. This situation is stable
for several days now.

What else did I change? I have updated Mac OS X inside the relevant time
interval. A lot of extensions,
frameworks, and programs are different now.

Bottom line: OOo doesn't crash any more, and I'm not able to reproduce the
former crash.
