2009 -------
right now we are using two different boost versions:

- 1.34 for gcc 4
- 1.30 for everything else

this is rather ugly, especially because (unsurprisingly, for a c++ library) the
two versions are not 100% compatible.

so it would seem to be a good idea to get rid of the older version, and use the
newer one on all platforms. because we do not use the stone age sun compiler
version 8 any more, this might actually have a hope of succeeding.
