------- Additional comments from [email protected] Thu May 7 13:14:11 +0000 2009 ------- @rainerbielefeld: The meaning of ".." in hierarchical, computer-related paths is virtually universal, I would say (at least hierarchical URLs, as well as Unix, Windows, DOS file notations use it consistently). A user who does not understand ".." will potentially also not understand the DOS/Windows drive letter convention ("C:") or any other detail in the attached ooo-3.1.jpg error message, for that matter. (Don't take it personally ;) .) And, in general, normalizing the URL when presenting it to the user might be misleading. With symbolic links on Unix, there are two interpretations for "..", and an important clue might be lost for the user if we normalize what we show to the user. The attached LegallyPersnicketiness.pdf demonstrates another problem, that IMO should be treated separately, namely that using an ellipsis when abbreviating a URL or pathname can be confusing (i.e., the user might have a hard time distinguishing between "..." and ".."). Feel free to address that problem with a fresh issue. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
