Issue 35525

CONCLUSIONS:
1) WHY I THINK THIS ENHANCEMENT SHOULD BE PRESENT:
• Many softwares listed in the test have all three functionalities; a few
have only two. However, the last four softwares—JCREATOR, VISUAL STUDIO, MS
WORD, AND MS EXCEL, NOT TO MENTION MS POWERPOINT—include this functionality.
This indicates that these softwares, of which JCreator and Visual Studio are
used for development and MS Word and MS Excel are used by professionals in the
workplace, implement the “CHE” functionality.
• Most professionals can then be considered as being familiar with “CHE”.
Such professionals may not realise at first what to do with Impress. Eventually
they may figure out this problem. However, after this experience their
confidence in the product from the point of view of familiarity will go down:
they will be wary of readily using features that they used due to familiarity
with Microsoft, as they are less confident now that the product is as similar
in
functionality; this could lead them to experiment more and spend precious time
trying to discover shortcut keys and combinations in order to see whether the
rules that applied to Microsoft products apply in the case of Impress. SINCE
MANY COMPANIES USE OFFICE TOOLS SUPPLIED MY MICROSOFT, WE CAN EXPECT
PROFESSIONALS TO BE FAMILIAR WITH THOSE PRODUCTS. IN MY VIEW THIS REQUEST FOR
ENHANCEMENT COULD BE VIEWED AS A USABILITY BUG.
• If we don’t take this usability issue and similar ones that people come
across, we may come up with a product that is useful but which is viewed by
users as an oddball as far as usability is concerned and that could be a
barrier
to its popularity among professionals.
2) Finally, the originator of Issue35525 said that in a textbox the cursor
should go to the home of the textbox. I found that this worked in Impress and
it
did so in a manner similar to MS PowerPoint. The cursor moved to the beginning
of the text in a text box when “Ctrl+Home” was pressed and to its end when
“Ctrl+End” was pressed.

CONFIGURATION:
 Version : OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 OOO310m19(Build:9420)
OS : Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
Version 6.0 (Build 6001: Service Pack 1)
Platform : PC

STEPS FOLLOWED TO TEST:
1. Open the. ppt or .odp file in Impress.
2. Press “Ctrl+Home” and “Ctrl+End”; “Home” and “End”; and “shift+end” and
“shift+home”.
3. Note whether the “slides” window goes up or down depending on whether, for
example, the “ctrl+home” is pressed or “ctrl+end” is pressed. Try this for all
pairs of combinations given and note the results each time. The use of “Home”
key alone or in combination with “shift” or “Ctrl” is supposed to take one to
the top of the “slides” window and to the first slide; the case is the opposite
for “End” and its combinations with “shift” and “Ctrl”.
4. Press “Ctrl+Home” after having brought focus to a text box area of a slide
and check whether the cursor moves to the home of the textbox area when the
“Ctrl+Home” combination is pressed.

To get a better idea of how widely the combinations listed in step 2 are used,
I
tested them on various softwares listed below. For the sake of ease I use the
following list of abbreviations:
CHE: “Ctrl” used with “home” and “End” takes one to the first or last slide
SHE: “Shift” used with “home” and “End” takes one to the first or last slide
HE: “Home” and “End” takes one to the first or last slide
The softwares, or the operating system section” My computer”, below are
listed
with the appropriate abbreviations that indicate that the particular
functionality denoted by the abbreviation works:
POWER POINT 2007: HE, SHE, CHE
GOOGLE CHROME 2.0.172.43: HE,SHE, CHE
WinDjView 1.0.3: HE, SHE, CHE
MICROSOFT HTML HELP EXECUTABLE: 1. Text window :HE, SHE, CHE
                                                                      2.
“Contents” window: HE, SHE
My Computer (browse folders till you get a folder where the scrolling bar is
present): HE, CHE
MOZILLA FIREFOX 3.5.2: HE, CHE
JCREATOR VERSION 4.50.010: CHE
MICROSOFT VISUAL STUDIO 2008: CHE
MICROSOFT OFFICE WORD 2007: CHE
MICROSOFT EXCEL: CHE
