I have a few local patches to address the above issues (/me thinks), plus some
more silencing. Will build on some platforms before committing this.

fs->thb: You made some output dependent on "$(COMMAND_ECHO)"=="", which means it
is now only shown in full-verbosity mode, and the "normal" and the "quiet" mode
don't differ too much anymore. Was this intentional? Just wondering - having
already heard people saying something like "this is nonsense, I need all that
output", we probably shouldn't make the "normal" mode *too* quiet ...
