Ah, this seems to be the solution. I never asked all this time because this
problem was not critical, I just had to remember to set the size to A4 whenever
I wanted to print.
I never heard about this file /etc/papersize and never had to set it to
something in earlier versions of OpenOffice.org. So this file was empty. Now I
added 'a4' to the file and restarted OpenOffice.org Writer. Loaded a document,
went to "Print" and the size was A4 now. Reproduced it on 2 different systems
with OpenOffice.org 3.0.1 and 3.1.0.

Problem solved.Thx a lot.
