The .odt format was created to keep well the structure of the documents. But
the current UI does not suit well for creating structured documents. Currently
UI is the copy of the MS Word 97/XP/2003 which is suited for visual editing of
the documents. Let me explain what I mean. For example, someone wants to create
a header. The interface offers many ways of doing this. Many Word-users still
uses font size, font face or boldness for making headers, just because this way
seems evident for this a header. Then the user will make a center align of this
'header', because header should be centered (f.e.). Using styles is not such
evident for many people. And the document created with the described scheme is
TERRIBLE, but it looks like OK.
Of course, current UI can not be just thrown away, because many many users used
to use it. I just suggest that there should be another, alternative interface
for creating structured documents. Such interface should not have font
selection combo box and font size combo box, font weight or font style change
buttons (B I U). It also should not have buttons for setting alignment (left,
centered, right, justified).
But it should have quick buttons to make a header (level 1,2,3), a regular
paragraph, insert an image, formula, table, lists (numbered and marked).
LyX has the interface for creating a well-structured documents, and it does its
job well.
