To clarify, I do not mean that the object needs to show up on the currently
viewed computer screen. The issue I am noting is that the object can be pasted
to a position outside the document entirely.

For example, I make a poster that is 48" by 36". I then copy an image from
position (20",20") from this poster, into an ordinary presentation with page
size 11" by 8.5". This image then ends up being pasted several inches outside
the printable area of the presentation.

I checked again and it does appear that openoffice does at least force the
object to appear in the viewable area of the document, such that the user can
scroll to the extreme corner of the viewable area to find it. I had thought
that in some cases the object went outside the area you could even scroll to,
but this appears to not happen.

Given that this is the case, I agree with your suggestion that it would be
better to just give the user some kind of cue as to where the object went.
Maybe automatically scrolling the currently viewed screen to include at least
part of the object? Or would this also cause problems?
