I have had multiple instances where I've tried to open a previously saved .odt
file only to find the file corrupted. Typically, upon opening the file I get a
dialog box asking me about what ASCII filter I want to apply to open the
document. The document then is opened but it's full of random symbols. I'm
using Open Office 3.2.1 (recently downloaded), but the prior version of Open
Office did the exact same thing.

Looking through the user forums, this appears to be a fairly common issue. I'm
working on a Dell "Inspiron" laptop and I'm using a USB stick for file storage.
I follow proper eject procedure for the stick. I've seen some suggestions on
the forums that the USB stick is the problem, but no other file on the stick
ever gets corrupted (I have many image files, spreadsheets, etc.).
