Sorry, I may have confused things by bringing up ODBC. I don't think the MS
Excel Driver for ODBC is my problem. When I open (or create a new) OOo database
file using the ODBC Data Source linked to the .xls file (with 3 named ranges),
the range names show up as tables in the database. No problem there.

My problem is with how OOo Calc handles Data...Select Range in a .xls file.
After opening the .xls file with the 3 named ranges, when I choose Data ...
Select Range... the box where the names should appear is empty.
I can define more ranges (Data...Define Range), then go to Data...Select Range,
and all the new names will show up in the box. I can save the file, and they
will still be there. Once I close the file and reopen, they will no longer
appear in the Data ... Select Range box. To add further confusion for me, if I
open the previously created .odb file, the new tables/ranges are shown along
with the older ones.
........
Just did some further testing and self-education - finally figured out how to
modify the Data Ranges in the .xls file. It appears that Insert > Names >
Define will do everything that Data > Define & Select do. I guess they are a
holdover from some earlier incarnation?
This issue can now be closed. How?
