OpenOffice does a good job of remembering the last five font faces used in
editing an existing document.

However, when a new file is created from scratch, the drop-down list defaults to
showing *all* fonts in alphabetical order. Many users have hundreds of fonts
installed on their system. Most of these fonts are there only in case someone
sends a file that specifies them, but in all likelihood will never be actively
deployed.

Some fonts are in fact not typographically useable but are installed by other
software that uses them as graphic elements (e.g., the WinBoard chess-playing
interface installs a "font" made up of chess figurines).

Having to scroll past so many fonts every time a new file is created takes up
time. Deleting unwanted fonts from the Fonts folder or moving them to another
folder is unpractical because then third-party documents specifying them might
not display correctly anymore in every software.

Proposed solution: similar to "last five fonts used" for existing documents,
enable OOo to remember, say, the last 15 fonts used by any of its components and
on any file.
