The sequence of events is: Open Writer; Write some text, such as "abc"; Select the "b"; Go to drop-down menu Format > Character; Select the "Position" tab; Click the "automatic" check-box; it is grey and does not respond, so I cannot select superscript for example. I experience a similar problem with Calc in formatting graph axes: Open calc; Enter trivial data such as a block of four integers in adjacent cells; Select those cells; Use drop-down menu Insert > Chart; Select a simple "lines only" chart; Double click the chart area; Double click the x axis; Select the "Scale" tab; Click any of the four "automatic" check-boxes; they are all grey and unresponsive. The online help and tutorials do not recognise this problem. I have tried turning off virus protection but this made no difference.
