The root cause of the problem is a problem in XLib's or the XServers handling of
the XDrawText16 API. A similar problem was observed in b6228733# on Xorg 6.8.1:
When multiple text items are to be displayed in a non-unicode X11 font the
item's delta value seems to be interpreted as an absolute value relative to the
calls x-origin instead of an "an additional change in the position along the x
axis".
The workaround is to output the glyphs one by one in this case.
