You may want to compare this to not having a version number of your Linux (SuSE vs. RedHat vs. Debian vs. etc.). OOo can and actually gets build in various brands and flavors, e.g. - StarOffice - StarSuite - Sun's OOo build - Debian's OOo build - Novells OOo build etc. So, before digging any deeper, what for is the version number needed you are asking for? Could you provide a pointer to the "auto-update" tool, which seems to need it? Thanks.
