These fonts seem to be evaluation or work-in-progress versions. The non-regular
styles have these swirls for many characters. This is independent of OOo. E.g.
load the italic version into "fontforge" on UNX or on WIN open the "wordpad"
application and do the same test you did in the screenshot.
