My goodness - the word "pity" was said with tongue in cheek and New Zealanders was meant to include all those gardening there - professional and non-professional, English, French, Maori, or Lilliputian. The word "common", is of course an Englishism but, since this chat room is in English, perhaps that could be permitted. So many words needed to get across what I had thought was a very simple point.
