I don't have an Okanogan dictionary here at home (there is an excellent one by
Tony Mattina), so I can't check it. I might do that some day. I really doubt,
however, that it is from the Okanogan language, since Lewis and Clark didn't go
that far north. A more likely source would be the Chinook jargon, which was
widely spoken along the Columbia River. It could be from some other Interior
Salish language also; those tribes lived along the upper Columbia, Allan Taylor
