20 years ago or so....when I took it into my head to garden, I started off with studying Herbal Medicine...and read every book I could on the subject....and then proceeded to dig plants from the wild whenever I could and replant them to my yard. After a year or two, I discovered that many of the plants, I was studying and transplanting, were Native Plants, and so I started focusing on them. But during this whole time, I always focused on reading the Botanical names of plants, and for the most part ignored the common names, as many plants with wide areas of growing, had multiple names, and I was a bit egocentric to have to learn all of those names, so the botanical name was easier. The place I've worked to for now 19 years emphasizes botanical over common names and that helped quite a bit.
