I've tried these (called "Q-tips" in the USA, probably a proprietary 
name), but I'm not sure that enough of the pollen comes free from the 
cotton. Another implement I tried was pipe cleaners (the kind with 
fuzz wrapped up in wire), but they may have the same problem. Little 
brushes seem better because, as Jim SHields described, you can clean 
and reuse them many times.
