The most remarkable Chicago area garden I ever saw was that of the late Erwin Evert, a botanist as well as inspired gardener who met an untimely demise last year (it was in many of the papers around the country: he was the botanist killed by a Grizzly Bear). Evert's garden was almost all native Illininois wildflwoers, mostly woodlanders: it was exquisitely designed and maintained.
Tom Vanderpoel would maintain Erwin's garden and created the lovely rock gardens in the University of Wisconsin's botanical garden: he would be my first recommendation.
