Name: Eremalche rotundifolia
Note: Eremalche rotundifolia is an annual desert species in the
Mallow Family (Malvaceae). Its common name, Desert Five-Spot, refers to the
five, large, red spots inside the globular flower. It's not easy to photograph
those five spots as E. rotundifolia closes up to a tight bud at night and on
cool or cloudy days. When it does open its blossom, it provides only the very
small entrance pictured here for ingress and egress of pollinators.
