you will find that most skilled coders can write thousands of lines of code without a design document. not to say that this is a good thing, however. in the case of ALSA, we've been an iterative process. as the API has developed, some people have been working on applications that use it. where the API has been found troublesome or incomplete, work has been done it, and it has been redesigned several times. this kind of design could never have been arrived at a priori. the kinds of things that ALSA now supports didn't even exist as a twinkle in anyone's eyes at the 0.5 stage. >It will be hard to get wide acceptance without some documentation.
