think of "pcm" as a sort of master that controls all pcm sources,
i.e. "music" (the synth) and "wave".

no problem here. but i feed the card's output to a mixer, which
might be better-behaved than your speakers.

have you ever done a live mix on a huge console and some clueless
folks ask the dreaded question "do you really know what each of
these many knobs does ?" ?
well, in the case of alsamixer, you can sit back, smile, and say, "i
haven't the faintest idea."  :-D

i know kövesdi györgy (sp?) has written a nice sblive mixer with a
more manageable routing matrix, but it seems he hasn't been updating
his alsa tree since february, and it does not compile with the
current state of things.

same here. looks to me like an arecord bug, the wav headers seem to
be incorrect...
must look into this further.
