Are you sure you've tested an existing ALSA application, to make sure
your installation even works?  (That tends to happen if /dev/snd/*
doesn't exist.)

Thanks for your help, I think I need to go back and check my alsa installation. Strange enough though, my xine palyer works fine and I have all the necessary alsa modules loaded.
