I would be willing to bet that the problem is that you don't have the development libraries. You can play via ALSA without having them. I don't think Fedora is very big on loading all of the development libraries. I run Fedora Core 1 on three systems at my house. When I load them I load "everything" but I still use Planet CCRMA to get the audio stuff. Even then I'll download certain libraries and build from scratch if I'm working on code. Planet CCRMA will definitely fix you up as far as development libraries are concerned and it's very simple to do.
