I have installed Mandrake Linux 8.0 and (briefly) 8.1 on my Gateway
PentiumIII with a SB Live value card, but can't get the sound to work.
I have installed the ALSA utilities and when I try to unmute with
amixer, I get the message "The ALSA sound driver was not detected in
this system". Mandrake 8.0 is presently installed with kernel
2.4.7-12.3mdk. 8.1 seemed to have other problems in addition to the
lack of sound. I am a relative newbee to Linux.

dmesg reports:
  Creative EMU10K1 PCI Audio Driver, version 0.7, 16:29:54 Aug 20 2001
PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 01:0a.0
  emu10k1: EMU10K1 rev 7 model 0x8032 found, IO at 0xdf80-0xdf9f, IRQ 11

cat /proc/modules reports:
  emu10k1 49232 0
  soundcore 3984 4 [emu10k1]

The only entry in my modules.conf file was:
  alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1

I feel modules.conf should have more entries for emu10k1 than that
single one. I have read all the faq's and howto's I can find and most
examples have several entries for the sound drivers. I could not find
anything for emu10k1, however. (the latest entry in the HOWTO was 1999)

Can anyone post an example modules.conf for a distro of Linux using
kernel 2.4.x? Hopefully someone out there is using Mandrake 8.x with a
SB Live successfully. I could get no help from the Mandrake folks, so I
am appealing to the source...

Thanks for your attention.
