Joshua I noticed your post while looking through the list archive. I have had very similar problems. I am using Mandrake as my distro -- I haven't updated my kernel to the latest yet (have to do that), but I too have got sound to work (in both kde and gnome), but it is only my rear speakers!! My tv card (sound in via the line-in port) doesn't produce sound through the speakers (also connected via the digital option). I did notice that plugging the headphones in the analog card does produce sound. Some of the alsamixer settings seem to work and others (most) don't do anything. Specifically, EMU10K1 PCM works like the master volume (the actual master volume doesn't do anything) and the wave surrond seems to work -- but nothing else.
