Thanks.  I've actually just got it working by compiling everything from the 
most recent source (installed in /usr/local) and then adding alsa-base from 
testing (I think) (with a link to put alsctl in the right place (and a 
dpkg-redirect to protect it)).

I guess it's probably more sensible to follow your advice and compile less by 
hand.
