I think it's also to provide a wider range of functionality and to support more hardware. (I believe it also allows things like multiple simultaneous opens of the sound devices, which would be a nice thing to see) > 2) Does it work w/ the 2.4.x kernels? Certainly does. > 3) What would be the advantage to me if i switched over to alsa (i > have an es1371)... i guess this question is pretty related to #1. Before upgrading to my new machine, I was using ALSA with an es1370 for ages - it's definitely a good thing. The main advantage I've noticed personally is when using xine (http://xine.sourceforge.net/) to play movie files - it's only able to do proper synchronisation of the audio and video streams with ALSA, so it sounds hideous on OSS... ALSA is also backwards-compatible with OSS, so all your old apps will work perfectly happily. > 4) My joystick doesn't work on the 2.4 series (on the 2.2 series it > did, but when i chose to enable es1371 support, it asked me if i > wanted joystick too)... Will alsa allow me to use my joystick As far as I know it should, yes. -- Adam Jones ([EMAIL PROTECTED])(http://www.yggdrasl.demon.co.uk/) .oO("BECAUSE THE DRIVERS AREN'T INSTALLED" ) PGP public key: http://www.yggdrasl.demon.co.uk/pubkey.asc _______________________________________________ Alsa-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/alsa-user
