I think it's also to provide a wider range of functionality and to
support more hardware.  (I believe it also allows things like multiple

Before upgrading to my new machine, I was using ALSA with an es1370 for
ages - it's definitely a good thing.  The main advantage I've noticed
personally is when using xine (http://xine.sourceforge.net/) to play
movie files - it's only able to do proper synchronisation of the audio
and video streams with ALSA, so it sounds hideous on OSS...

ALSA is also backwards-compatible with OSS, so all your old apps will
work perfectly happily.
