Shawn, you mention that you have a via chipset, but then you say you have an
ensoniq ess-1371 add-in card right?  I think your mention of the via chipset
may have been a bit misleading.  If it is true that your card is an es-1371
add-in, I recommend changing the slot it was in and moving the card as far
away (physically) as possible from the video card.

Sounds like just a case of emi.

I installed an ATI Radeon 8500(AGP) to replace my ATI Mach64 4Mb card(PCI). 
The sound under Alsa went from perfect to noisy as hell. Specifically random

high pitched clicks or bleeps. The current 0.5 driver is less noisy than the

0.9 driver. Any ideas? 

My motherboard has the Via chipset (about a year old). I suspect that the 
increased load is creating some interruption in the audio stream.

The card in the computer is an ens-1371.
