This is a known problem with Mozilla/Flash.  Flash will lock up if it
can't open /dev/dsp; xmms can prevent other applcations from opening
it. (Maybe Flash opens it only if it can get sole use?)

You can avoid the problem by using a sound multiplexer, like KDE's aRts
multiplexer.  Set the xmms output to "aRts Driver" (assuming you have
it).  Probably GNOME has something similar.
