Okay, I created that file in my home directory, opened alsaplayer with
the flag/options you suggested.
ALSA opened just fine but didn't open the particular file I pointed it
to... and when I selected a file via point-n-click, only 2 of the 4
speakers were working still.
As I said, I had to create the ,.asoundrc file and I put those lines in
there you suggested.  Nothing else is in there.
Getting closer, you think?
