Is the sound chip enabled in the BIOS?  (Also, do you have "Plug and
Play OS" turned off, if it's in there?)

What does "cat /proc/interrupts" tell you?  Are all your interrupts
taken by other cards, perhaps?  If so, do you have any IRQs set to "ISA"
in the BIOS?
