Ok, I checked the Dave Philipps doc, but in the end solved it myself
! - Muse saw the MIDI port provided by Timidity, so Muse didn't need
any of the softsynths that it provided itself, which was what was
causing it to complain that the audio hardware was already in use.

After some fiddling with the MIDI ports menu, I managed to get some
sound, and to play some .mid files, and, by finding someone else with
Cubase, I was able to get some old .all files converted to .mid files
so now I can do *everything* :-)

The sound quality is not great, but I saw (maybe in the quicktoot)
that I need to install some low latency patchs, and minimise all other
system activity; at the moment, even moving the mouse in and out of
the muse window without clicking anything is affecting the sound :-)))
I'll do that soon.

I have a couple of extra small questions though. Firstly, I can't
become Brian Eno II if I am limited to only the standard 128 MIDI
sounds :-))) So is it possible to download alternative sound fonts
into the softsynth or the MIDI sequencer? (I guess the second option
would be must more flexible.) I didn't see anything in the Timidity
man pages.

Secondly, what took me a while to understand is all the MIDI port
plumbing, both inside and outside Muse. Can anybody offer me any
URLs or book references which explain this sort of plumbing? (As a
simple example: the 'device name' on the MIDI port menu can only be
an input or an output, right?, but then what does the 'instrument'
mean in both cases?)

Many many thanks for all help received; I would have thrown the
keyboard in the bin without you!

Regards

Alexis
