assuming you didn't install it from an rpm or deb package, do:
$ locate alsa

and rm everything you find.
sometimes the obvious answer is the way to go...

p.s. you may need to edit your /etc/modules.conf if your new version
is a big jump from your old version.
e.g. the recent change of the snd-card-foo module names to snd-foo.
