Under Unix, this is normally achieved by an additional demon. Sucg a demon often belongs to a particualt desktop environment. For example esound comes from Elightenment WM (perhaps this is now also the standard sound demom under Gnome) and KDE ships with aRts which also encompasses a full featured software synthesizer. Problem with these things are latency and sound quality. The one an only approach (as far as I am aware of) to do sound multiplexing in top quality especially tailored for Alsa is the JACK project. It is in early stage but there are reports from people who are already using it successfully.
