Takashis advice was to change the mode to 666, not 600.

Try "chmod 666 -R /dev/snd" and see if that allows you to at least
run all apps as any user... THEN worry about setting up groups perms
properly for security later (although if you are the only user of
your own desktop system then there is really no security problem).
