Hi there,

I have bought several identical PCs for our department and all face the
following problem:

When I first configure the soundcard using YaST or alsaconf, everything
looks fine and I can hear the test sound played. I can set the volume
using alsamixer. Afterwards, I can play CD audio and system sounds.

However, when rcalsasound is started for the next time, the system hangs
when the script executes alsactl -restore /etc/asound.state. Hanging
means, that mouse and keyboard are dead.

If I reboot and try to run alsaconf again, the system hangs as well, and
the file /etc/modules.conf is destroyed, meaning that the file exists,
but contains complete nonsense (looks very binary).

My current work-around is to delete /etc/asound.state, start alsasound
manually, execute alsaconf, and finally set the volume using alsamixer
-- everytime I start my system. Alternatively, I could switch off the
onboard sound, of course.

My configuration is:
SuSE Linux 8.0 (originally containing alsasound 0.9.0 beta 12)
alsa-driver-0.9.0rc2
alsa-lib-0.9.0rc2
alsa-oss-0.9.0rc1
alsa-utils-0.9.0rc2
ASUS P4T533-C with Intel 82801 AB (ICH2) chip

If someone can help me to solve this problem, i would be very glad.
I am willing to provide more detailed information and run addtional
test if required.

Kind regards,

Tobias
