realplayer don't has native alsa support it uses the oss-emulation of
alsa. as mplayer plays the most real formats and has also native alsa9
and arts support and is *open-source* just try mplayer instead.
if you really want to use realplayer look at:
1. your artsd settings are right (if you use arts)
2. oss emulation of alsa is properly installed
