That would be something simple like the Edirol UA-1A <http://www.edirol.com/products/info/ua1a.html>, or with more features, e.g. the M-Audio Duo <http://www.midiman.net/products/m-audio/duo.php>. (For MP3 encoding, the UA-1A should be enough.) > The only catch is I would like to chain as many as I can (Upwards of > 6-8) together, to do simultaneous records to multiple instances of MP3 > encoders (Darkice). One USB 1.x bus has neither enough bandwith nor enough power to support that many audio devices, so connecting them via hubs wouldn't work. But it should work when connecting them directly to the computer, as the USB controllers integrated on most motherboards have only two ports per bus (i.e. a board with 6 USB ports has 3 buses). And it is possible to install PCI cards with more USB controllers. However, I cannot guarantee that it works; AFAIK nobody has tried to do this before. OTOH I don't see any fundamental problem, either. > Does the ALSA USB driver support multiple instances of USB sound > devices? Yes. ALSA can handle up to eight sound cards.
